Movie: Blinded By The Light – 8/20/22, 7pm
On August 20th at 7pm, “Movies with Spirit” will be coming to Holy Cross/Santa Cruz.
Our feature will be BLINDED BY THE LIGHT (2019).
Synopsis: An award-winning comedy drama inspired by a true story. Javed, a Muslim Pakistani British teen in 1987 growing up in a town 30 miles northwest of London writes poetry to escape a crushing combination of anti-Pakistani racial intolerance, anti-Muslim, economic turmoil, and the inflexibility of his tradition-bound father. But when a classmate, introduces Javed to the heartland rock music of Springsteen, Javed immediately falls in love with it, seeing identifiable parallels with his own life’s struggles. Even though his father forbids him to listen to “The Boss,” Javed discovers a cathartic outlet in Springsteen’s music for his own pent-up dreams, ultimately winning him attendance at a lecture at Monmouth College in New Jersey, near where Springsteen grew up. His father tells him that if he goes, he will not be allowed to return home.
“A jubilant story that’s told with grounded honesty.” — David Sims, The Atlantic.
“Watching the teenage Javed become his own man is the best time I’ve had at the movies this year.” — Carrie Rickey, Truthdig.
Rated PG–13.
